Citrus Crocked Ham

This tender and moist ham is so easy to make in your crock-pot. Top with citrus fruit, cloves, brown sugar and ginger ale--delicious.

Ingredients:

  • 1 4 lb precooked ham
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1 12 oz can ginger ale
  • 3-4 cloves

Method

Place ham in standard crock-pot. Arrange orange and lemon slices alternately over ham. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over top of citrus slices and ham. Then lightly sprinkle a few teaspoons of ginger ale over brown sugar before pouring the rest of the ginger ale around sides of ham so liquid covers bottom of crock-pot. (Evenly distribute the gingerale on all sides of the ham.) Place three or four cloves in ginger ale, and cover crock-pot. Cook on high for first hour, and then low for next four or five hours. Remove ham and place on platter. Let stand 10-15 minutes before slicing.

Notes: This is a great recipe for Easter Sunday because it allows the cook to attend Easter services at church without worrying about tending to the ham. The ham comes out succulent and flavorful. I've had so many compliments on this recipe that I was even asked to cook it on a volunteer basis for a church dinner. Another reason I love doing this is because everyone loves the lure of the aroma as they walk into the house. The leftovers make flavorful sandwiches. And bits and pieces of the leftover ham make great stock for homemade minestrone soup.

Number of servings: 10-12
